Diary of competitions, training, etc.

Dantero's Mac de Dubois/Vassiliev des Contes d'Hoffmann:

FRIII - Mac earned the first leg of his FRIII title with a score of 334/400. He got a 0 on the guard of object (just couldn't wait that long for a bite) which could have put him in the mid/upper 360s. Next time. Judge: Rick Maples Club: BARC Ryde, CA - 2009-04-25

Mac trialed at FRIII for the first time. He lost his basket (not a surprise), had a bunch of slow outs (little bit of a surprise here) and lost quite a few points for being a mouth (no surprise here), but still pulled off a 301.950. Not passing, but not bad for his first attempt. Judge Philippe Touy Host Club SCABR Riverside CA - 2009-02-01

Mac competed in the Western Zone Selectifs at FRII but did not pass. He was to busy barking at the judge and looking for decoys to pay attention to the jumps he was supposed to jump, and took 2-3 tries for all of them. Then he decided on the throw retrieve to very methodically carry his retrieve object 25 feet further up the field, put it down, and eat the large piece of steak that was laying there. -20 Forgot to bring the retrieve object back to me also. -8 (actually should be 4, but the judge confused the two retrieves on the scoresheet and I didn't bother to correct it). On the defense of handler he became confused about which exercise he was doing, and never left heel position, so did not see the hit when it came. -30 Between that and a lot of other nickel and dime point losses Mac ended up with a 199.? - 2008-07-12

FRII - Mac earned the second leg of his FRII with a score of 282.6. After 3 days of being in the 100+ (100-106) degree weather, he managed to keep it together long enough to compete and walk away with High in Trial FRII. Judge was Hector Dulac, Riverside CA. - 2008-07-05

FRII - Mac earned the first leg of his FRII, with a 3rd place finish. He barely passed with a 240.5/300, but actually turned in a pretty good performance. However he anticipated the jump command on the palisade (-10) and during the retrieve he briefly touched a raw chicken drumstick (his retrieve object is white also) for -20. Host club was SCABR, judge was Richard Bonilla. And yes, although he was quiet during open field the day before, he did bark through the entire FRII routine. - 2008-02-23

Mac trialed at FRII for the first time at the BARC. Unfortunately his lack of experience showed and he didn't pass with a score of 224.9 He did both the hurdle and palisade, but on the long jump he ticked the first bar in the jump on his first attempt (cleared the jump) and the judge said he had to retry. After that he ran through the jump. Nickeled and dimed the points in other areas, 0'd the seen retrieve because of a handler error. I stepped on his back foot right as he grabbed the retrieve object and went to pass me, he thought it was a correction so he spit it out and went back into heel. In the blind search he easily found the decoy, but it was that decoys first exercise in protection and Mac was not sure he found the right one. He kept checking the blind, then looking outside the blind for Felix, the first decoy who he'd just bit in 3 exercises. The decoy was told to escape, Mac lost the points for no barking in the blind, and was also confused about the exercise because I was still all the way down the field during the first escapes. This killed us in the blind search and he lost 25.5 of the points possible. We are making progress though in his excitement (ie barking) level during trials, and there was a lot less barking during the routine, and more focus on me and the job at hand. Judge was Roger Goron. - 2007-10-20

FRI - Mac earned the second leg of his FRI with a score of 179.6 in Banning CA with judge Yvon Prigent. - 2007-09-22

FRI - Mac earned the first leg of his FRI, with a 2nd place. Not as much style (ie control) as in the Brevet, and his score of 180 shows it, but he kept it together, mainly loosing points for creeping at the line of departure on the protection exercises, and nickel/dime points elsewhere. His handler lost a couple also, for dropping the retrieve object. - 2007-06-23

FR Brevet - Mac earned his FR Brevet with a score of 98.3 and High in Trial under Pepe Camarena in Riverside CA at the SCABR club trial. The total Brevet entry was 14 dogs, one of the largest Brevet entries in NARA History. - 2007-03-03

CGC - Mac passed his CGC at a CGC/WPTCA BST in Long Beach CA - 2006-11-25

Mac broke a canine during a training accident. While doing bungee work, the decoy stepped almost, but not quite, out of reach. Mac managed to get just one canine in the suit and the force of the bungee yanking him back broke the tooth off. The specialist felt the broken canine was to short to put a cap on, so that tooth was given a root canal. There was wear on the back of the other canines consistent with chewing chain link, so the unbroken canine was capped to prevent it from breaking in the future in a similar situation. The process took almost 3 months (no biting or even ball playing allowed) from break until Mac was cleared to work again, with the time it took to get the dental appointment, then the multiple visits required for the root canal, impression for the cap, a second impression because the first cap didn't fit, and then the installment of the second cap. - 2006-08-15

Mac performed the dog in white for FR Brevet. He wasn't quite ready to compete, still needs to work on his technique (was hitting the decoy on the bottom of the jacket) but overall the control was better than I expected and he should be ready to trial soon. - 2006-07-01
